A Jacobean Manor tucked away in its own secret valley.Hidden away in a wooded hollow just beneath the wild tors of Dartmoor, Lewtrenchard is a house virtually untouched by time. The original manor was mentioned in the Domesday Book, but todays impressive Jacobean dwelling, set in its own shrub filled gardens and surrounded by peaceful parkland, dates from the early 1600s.Over the years it was home to a series of colourful characters James Gould, one the earliest adventurers to trade on the Chinese mainland, Edward Gould the compulsive gambler and suspected murderer, and the Reverend Sabine Baring Gould, celebrated hymn writer and novelist who composed "Onward Christian Soldiers" at the desk that still stands in the front hall. This house, steeped in history, is large enough to be imposing, yet not so grand as to be unwelcoming. Stepping over the ancient slate floor in the impressive hallway one immediately feels very much at home.

Lifton Hall is a two star, Grade II listed building dating from the 16th Century that combines traditional character with modern refurbishments including wireless internet and digital TV. We serve locally sourced, home-cooked, honest food in a relaxed and charming atmosphere. We are ideally situated for touring the southwest, yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle of some of the major resorts. There are great beaches, wild moor land and some of Devon and Cornwalls best visitor attractions within easy reach. The old market town Launceston is only 5-10 minutes drive whilst both The Eden Project and the north coast can be reached within 45 minutes. Bodmin Moor and Dartmooor are under 30 minutes drive. For golf enthusiasts there are dozens of courses in the area, with the closest 10-15 minutes drive away. We currently offer the ‘Out To Play Golf’ scheme with two green fees for the price of one. Our bar has loads of traditional charm, including two open fires, and is the perfect place to enjoy an ale and some freshly cooked food. Built in the 17th century The rifle Volunteer was originally built to accommodate a Mine Captain and his family during the hey day of the mining industry in the area. It now forms the focal point as the local village pub for the village of St Annes.
