Nestling in the pretty village of Charlton Horethorne, the Kings Arms reopened on March 11th 2009. Welcoming, cosy, lovely garden, good home cooked food, attractive comfortable accommodation. The Kings Arms country pub and hotel is in the centre of Charlton Horethorne just in Somerset but only a couple miles from the border with Dorset, and three miles from Sherborne, Wincanton and the A303. It is owned and managed by Sarah and Tony Lethbridge who bought it in 2007 and have completely refurbished the building from cellar to loft – keeping the atmosphere of a traditional pub but adding all the comfort, convenience and facilities of the 21st century. The imposing façade of the Edwardian building has been retained but behind it everything has changed. The main bar, the snug and the small restaurant offer a traditional welcome with good English oak floors in the snug and the small restaurant and real slate in the main bar. And behind the bars and through the atrium there is the newly built main restaurant decorated in strong warm stripes of crimson, red and purple. Outside, the large garden terrace takes full advantage of the rural landscape sitting just below the Cleeve, as the hills behind the pub are locally known, and well away from the road, popular with walkers and perfect for a tranquil break from the city. The croquet lawn beside the terrace provides entertainment for onlookers and sport for those cracking the mallets!

The Britannia Inn is an 18th century building that was originally a school house for girls opened in 1743 and funded by the then Lord Digby. A character structure, this two bar operation is located but a stones throw from Sherborne Abbey and only five minutes walk from the station. There are other local attractions found in this historic town such as Sherborne House, the home of Lord Digby, Sherborne Castle, former home of Sir Walter Raleigh as well as many which are within an hours journey such as Shaftesbury, the Cerne Abbas Giant, Dorchester and Shepton Mallet. Wincanton Racecourse is just half an hour away and we can arrange transport for you should you wish to make a day of it and spend your wiinings on a celebratary drink or two! We offer a choice of rooms, double, family and single and provide a hearty English Breakfast to set you up for the day ahead. Classed as grade II* by the Department of the Environment, various features are singled out as being of special interest – the original Mendip lead drainpipes at the front carry the crest of the original owners and the year of completion, 1732. The walls and pillars with urns topping them which formed the entrance of the old gardens are also singled out for specific mention. Stone for the construction of the 4ft thick "rubble" walls was taken from an outcrop in what is now the garden or, to put it differently, the house was probably built where the stone was to reduce haulage by slow and primitive methods. A small spring rises under the cellar of Bowlish House and links up with an underground stream routed diagonally across the cellar floor just under the old flagstones. Thus the temperature of the large cellars is more constant than otherwise and varies by no more than 2 or 3 degrees either side of the ideal 50 ºF. Originally built by a prosperous clothier, one of several who built large houses along the valley of the river Sheppey. Ownership passed to the Anglo Bavarian Brewery of Shepton Mallet about the mid 1800’s at which time the "new" Wells Road, passing through part of Bowlish House property, took off part of the ‘factory’ rooms. For eighty years, successive brewery managers (a more senior position than current usage of the word would indicate) lived at Bowlish House. After the closure of the brewery in 1920 the house was bought by the Somerset Brick and Tile Company and the Youngman family occupied Bowlish House until the death of Harold Youngman in 1954. At this time the house passed to private ownership and began its latest phase as first, a hotel and subsequently a restaurant. Both the interior and exterior of Bowlish House were repaired by Stephen Clark (of Clarks Shoes) who, in 1964, bought the property and spent a very considerable sum of money in major restoration work. We are going through a restoration program on the interior of the building, creating a natural blend of Georgian architecture and colour schemes with contemporary art providing truly stylish yet charming surroundings where everyone is made welcome. As part of our four year restoration project here at Bowlish House, we hope that you enjoy your visit and welcome any comments on the changes already made and planned. The whole hotel is non-smoking and any guest found to have been smoking in their room after departure will incur a penalty of £300 against the card used to secure the booking.
