Blackpool popular for overnight accommodation

Despite the dominance of big cities for one-night breaks, Blackpool has proved that it can still hold its own as new figures place it within the top ten in Britain.

According to VisitBritain, 22.8 million overnight visits were made last year to cities around the UK.

Out of those, Blackpool was placed at number five, with 1.78 million one-night stays.

Apart from Scarborough, it is the only other seaside town that has managed to compete in the top ten, as the rest of the numbers are made up by big cities such as London and Manchester.

Speaking with the Blackpool Gazette, head of tourism at Blackpool Council Jane Seddon said: "It's excellent news Blackpool is in the top ten. We're constantly looking at ways to improve what we can offer to the tourist who stays in the town.

"Recently we have held many popular events, including the Kaiser Chiefs on the new Headlands and the International Volleyball Tournament, which bring people into the town.

"We are now looking at new ways of bringing people into the town which is that little bit different."
