Despite a rather wet summer Cumbria is experiencing a strong boom in tourism, according to new figures.

Cumbria Tourism claims that it has experienced one of its busiest months on record during August as more people opt to book online to stay in local accommodation, reports the News & Star.

The website also confirmed that it has experienced a 42 per cent rise in bookings compared to last year's August with September's figures also looking very healthy. It is though that the late summer as well as a number of initiatives aimed at boosting holidaymakers' interest in the region has played a key role in the record visitor numbers.

James Berresford, director of Tourism at the North West Regional Development Agency, explained that ecommerce is vital way for local companies to boost their income and capitalise on the ongoing development of the internet.

"More and more people are turning to the web to research and book their holidays, and it is vital that our tourism businesses are visible online," he added.
