Dispel some Bronte myths at the Parsonage museum
19th Sep 2007A new exhibition at the Bronte Parsonage museum in Haworth, West Yorkshire is hoping to challenge some of the popular misconceptions about the literary family.
Running until April 2009, the Who Where the Brontes? Exhibition includes a number of special items including letters, drawings and even samples of hair. Curator Emma King hopes that visitors will quickly realise that there is more to the Brontes family history.
"The popular story says that the Brontës lived a remote, rural life. It describes three sisters who lived in poverty with a distant father and unfriendly aunt. Their brother drank away the family money forcing them to work," explained the curator.
"Yet before their tragic, early deaths they each wrote novels that would become famous around the world the story is an attractive one, but not entirely true. This exhibition hopes to challenge some of these perceptions," she added.
The Bronte Museum is open from 11am to 5pm from October to March and admission costs £5.50 per adult, £2 per child or a family ticket can be purchased for £13.
