Edinburgh cooks up a bigger breakfast

A breakfast familiar to many who have had a bed and breakfast holiday in Edinburgh will be porridge, though few will have seen a bowl of the country's famous fair quite as big as that cooked up recently.

Cooks at Edinburgh Farmers' Market created the world's biggest bowl of porridge with 81kg (178lb) of oats.

The event was organised by Stoats Porridge Bars and Tony Stone, from the company, told the Telegraph: "It is very exciting to get our porridge into the record books.

"We have a stall at Edinburgh Farmers' Market every week so it's great to be able to mark our enthusiasm for the market in this way."

The porridge was stirred with a six foot stick, known as a "spurtle" and was enough to give 2,000 people a healthy and hearty breakfast.

It is the second time this year the record has been broken. It previously stood at 66.26kg of porridge, set at a farmers' market event in Warwickshire in January.
