Oxfordshire celebrates 1,000 years of history
27th Sep 2007To commemorate Oxfordshire turning 1,000 years old, the Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock has recently opened a new exhibition on local celebrities.
Photographs of Oxfordshire people who were in the public eye, playing some part in history will make up a new display called Who is Who? A Thousand Years of Oxfordshire Faces.
Some particularly noteworthy figures in the collection include former prime minister Winston Churchill, the first four-minute mile runner Roger Bannister and beloved mistress of Henry II, Rosamund the Fair.
The exhibition, which has received funding from the Arts Council, is set to run until November 18th before embarking on a tour around the country.
Cherry Gray, county council curator, spoke to the BBC, saying: "The exhibition is a wonderful mix of art and artefacts, all of which have a strong link with Oxfordshire and reflect its past in terms of home life, work and play.
"Many objects have a story to tell, like the uniform of Nurse Cornish who worked at the John Radcliffe Hospital during the First World War."
