Over half a million pennies have been put together in a giant floor structure at the Newlyn Exchange Gallery in Penzance.

The display, titled The Abolition of Work, is designed to make people aware of the worth of money, and hopes to encourage people to examine our relationship with currency.

While a penny itself does not count for much in today's society, the 650,000 coins that were used mean that the artwork is worth £6,500 put together.

Artists David Cross and Matthew Cornford, who studied together at St Martin's School of Art, collaborated on the work after coming up with the idea in the pub.

They have said that they chose copper-coated pennies after exploring the connection of copper with Penzance, as copper mining once made up part of Cornwall's economy.

The museum is to show the penny floor display until November 18th. ADNFCR-1180-ID-18298977-ADNFCR
