Details of a new hotel in Edinburgh have been revealed as part of a major redevelopment of the city's Haymarket.

The 16-storey hotel will become the centrepiece of £200 million plans to regenerate the area and could be completed by 2012 – providing much needed accommodation capacity in the Scottish capital.

Local architect Richard Murphy has been in charge of the design of the five-star hotel and it is hoped that the amazing glass and stone fronted building will quickly become a major landmark.

"The Haymarket site deserves a building of significance and we believe the hotel will redefine Haymarket in the same way as the Balmoral transformed the Waverley Valley and the Caledonian Hotel enhanced the west end of Edinburgh," explained Mr Murphy.

He added: "The hotel will act as a focal point and lantern to the western approach into the city centre."

The redevelopment of Haymarket is also set to include new office space as well as improved transport links for visitors travelling to the city.
