Walkers in the countryside around Edinburgh were given the opportunity to exercise their lungs as well as their legs recently as the Balerno Theatre Company took to the hills in fancy dress as part of an attempt to raise money for their latest stage production.

The company's vice-chairwoman, Linda McKenzie, hit on the idea of a sponsored walk and sing-along - which saw participants singing songs from well-known musicals while on a two-hour trek through the Pentland Hills - after watching the BBC programme How To Solve A Problem Like Maria.

In return for serenading folk with tunes including Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, organisers aimed to raise £800 towards the cost of staging the musical Annie at the Churchill Theatre.

"We had nuns, Marias and even a monk," Ms McKenzie, commenting on the variety of costumes on display, told the Edinburgh Evening News.

"A couple of members dressed up as sheep, which I think was quite a strange thing for the real sheep on the hills to see.

"The walk was really busy, as it is every weekend, and we actually managed to get a few hill walkers to join in.

"We chose well-known songs that everyone knew, because we didn't want to be carrying song sheets."

Should the Balerno Theatre Company manage to raise a total of £15,000, Annie will be staged in March.
