The sout- west coast county of Devon is not only setting an example in sustainable tourism standards for England but has also garnered the praise of its fellow New Zealand neighbours.

Tourism leaders at Qualmark, New Zealand have been so impressed by the UK's Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) and Devon's tradition of green tourism practices that it has agreed to adopt a similar scheme in its country.

More than 270 areas in England have been accredited by the committee, with at least 133 businesses in Devon adopting the strict standards covering accommodation, attractions, activity providers, cafes and restaurants.

The Ramada Hotel in Bradford, Newlyn Hotel in Torquay, Hell Bay Hotel in Kingsbridge along with the Lovehayne Farm Cottages in Colyn are among the first hotels, bed and breakfasts and self-catering accommodation to adopt the standards.

The scheme's criteria demands adherence to a wide range of areas including management, energy saving, the use of local produce and protection of local wildlife and landscape.

Other organisations with the accreditation include the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset, Bristol and Bath, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.
