Edinburgh to host ancestral clan assembly
26th Oct 2007The capital city of Edinburgh will be the setting for the nation's largest assembly of ancestral clans as a way for ancestors from all over the world to reunite with family members from Scotland.
The event, billed as The Gathering 2009 will be held in July and participants will be able to enjoy a variety of Scottish traditions in the World Highland Games such as caber tossing, hammer throwing as well as international pipe bands and highland dancing.
Visiting families will also be able to research their clan histories at the event and are invited to dress in the traditional tartan clothes of years ago.
This event is welcome to families and tourists from all backgrounds however and is not limited to people with Scottish heritage. As the largest international clan gathering to take place in Scotland, the event is part of the government's Homecoming Scotland Initiative aimed at preserving its nation's culture and heritage.
As the event is over a year away, visitors can take their time in planning accommodation in convenient places around the large city of Edinburgh and can even book tour guides with travel groups that will help you research your Scottish heritage - no matter how far back it goes.
