The Lakeland Trails races throughout the mountain and lake-laden area of the Lake District are a favourite with runners throughout the world.

A series of four races held at the towns of Coniston, Hawkshead, Staveley and Keswick in Cumbria were rated among the UK's Top 50 Races by Runner's World magazine.

The area, known for its breathtaking mountaintop views and icy blue lakes, provides a natural haven for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and running and caters well to those who also want comfortable accommodation in self-catering flats, hotels or bed and breakfasts.

Visitors from outside Cumbria have made up the largest amount of outdoor runners in the races from 2007, while more than 80 per cent of these adventure enthusiasts made the trip from all over the UK.

Bed and breakfast accommodation near Coniston in the Lake District include the affordable Orchard Cottage, with views of nearby fells such the Old Man of Coniston at a height of 2,627 ft and easy access to hiking and running trails.
