A rare type of Japanese pure-bred cattle known as Wagyu are going to be available as a delicacy for food lovers in the historic Lake District.

Hotelier and farmer Jonathan Denby will be the first farmer in England to rear his own herd of Wagyu - known for its Kobe-style beef - for his three Lake District hotels, the Newby Bridge Hotel in Lake Windermere, the Damson Dene at Crosthwaite and the Riverside in Kendal.

For those with a palate for the exquisite, the cattle is fed with Lake District real ale from the Hawkeshead Brewery in Staveley which produces a tender meat that actually is low on the cholesterol list.

Visitors to this area of the Lake District who want to sample some of the home-grown, fine beef can do so while staying in traditional outdoorsy yet modern hotels such as Mr Denby's Newby Bridge Hotel that offers five acres of gardens leading to Lake Windermere for fishing and hiking.
