Leeds a 'cosmopolitan' city in Yorkshire

Branded as modern, thriving city that still has plenty of historical value, Leeds has both daytime attractions such as abbeys and estates, as well as modern nightlife for those travelling through the heart of England.

Voted the UK's best shopping destination by the Rough Guide to Britain, the city is known for its attention to retail as it boasts Europe's largest indoor market and close to the stylish boutiques of the Victoria Quarter.

The city has easy walking access within the small city centre and visitors rate the Canal Gardens, Lotherton Hall and Millennium Square as good places to visit.

Of particular interest is the city's Grand Theatre and Opera House, opened in 1878 and which features Victorian, Romanesque and Gothic styles.

The theatre's first performance in 1878 was Much Ado About Nothing and since then performers such as Julie Andrews and Laurence Olivier have acted there.

Performances include colourful acts like the Elvis Collection, with an impersonator reliving the 'King's' 1977 performance, and the Nutcracker ballet in December.

Affordable hotel accommodations are available in the city centre, such as the Brookfield Hotel, located just half a mile from the city centre and ten minutes away from the Royal Armouries Museum and Clarence Dock.
