Despite the onset of winter, travellers looking to visit the outdoors can visit Trengwainton Gardens in Cornwall.

Although the gardens are located near the tip of Land's End on the coast, the area is protected by the warming effects of the Gulf Stream and has typically mild winters that allow the area to host a variety of plant species that cannot be grown anywhere else in the open in England.

Mild-tempered plants cover the gardens such as camellias, passionflowers and rhododendrons gathered by the garden's founder, Lieutenant Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho in 1925 and which is now part of the National Trust.

Accommodation lies close to the gardens and families can stay at a number of bed and breakfast style locations such as the Wymering Guest House in Penzance that sits just off the coast and close to other national properties and gardens for the outdoor garden visit in autumn.
