Visit the preserved seaside town of Whitehaven
16th Oct 2007Located in the serene countryside county of Cumbria, the town of Whitehaven has been recognised as a good example of a seaside town revitalising its history to attract visitors by English Heritage.
Refurbishing of the town's harbour and the opening of such attractions as the Rum Story exhibition are some of the projects that English Heritage experts said gave the town "a home with a soul".
History lovers and families alike can enjoy learning about what was once one of the largest ports in England after London and once home to the most important rum port of the UK.
The Rum Story exhibition takes visitors through the Jefferson family's wine and spirits business, the longest running working wine merchants until 1998, and explains the profitable and also cruel business of trading rum on the Virginia trade.
What Phil Haslehurst, one of the people responsible for the re-creation of the exhibition, called "a very cosmopolitan place in those days" is now a well preserved town that has equally impressive accommodation.
Just a short five minute walk from town is Glenard Guest House, once a merchant's private home, is an affordable stay for a family or a small group looking to visit the Whitehaven and afterwards head over to the lakes or coast for an outdoor tour.
