Cornwall 'favourite UK holiday destination'

In a major boost for hotels and accommodation in the region, a new survey has seen Cornwall voted as Britain's top 'at home' holiday destination.

According to a study by Saga Holidays, almost a quarter of those polled chose Cornwall as their favourite destination, with the region's dramatic landscape and good food cited among the reasons for its success.

Hotels in Cornwall can offer some of the most interesting dishes anywhere in the UK, with local cuisine dominated by fresh seafood, as well as famous items such as the renowned Cornish pasty.

The survey asked people between the ages of 18 and 55 to choose their favourite place in the UK to holiday, with 22 per cent choosing Cornwall, while Scotland came second in the poll with 16 per cent.

Samantha Groom, the tourism officer for Carrick District Council, applauded the work of local, hotels and bed and breakfasts in helping boost the appeal of Cornwall.

She told This is Cornwall: "We have seen a rise in levels of the visitor experience down here and the standards of accommodation are rising and now there is so much emphasis on local produce. These are all things that visitors want and appreciate. Our own studies show that people come here because they love the environment."
