The Lake District in north-west England will be in the running to become a World Heritage Site alongside such world famous icons as the Taj Mahal in India and the pyramids in Egypt.

Should the area receive the prominent title in 2011, it will only highlight its already wide-reaching impact of its skyscraping mountains and placid lakes that have also prompted the literary works of many famous authors.

Next April and May a group working towards the nomination will tour throughout Cumbria in order to promote appreciation through outdoor events for the area's strengths.

First-time visitors to the area can find towns and villages spread throughout the area's lakes, mountains and fells that have lived in harmony with nature for generations.

Travel is easy by car through the compact Lake District National Park and towns such as Windermere, Whitehaven, Kendal, Grasmere and Hawkshead are just a few of the towns that offer plenty of bed and breakfasts, hotels and self-catering accommodation for whatever type of trip your group plans to take.
