Edinburgh has more cool bars than anywhere else in Scotland and also has some of the top accommodation in the UK, according to one travel writer.

Peter Irvine, the author of Scotland the Best, which is published in its seventh edition this week, has praised Edinburgh's bars and social scene and has also been impressed by the city's hotels.

His latest edition of the guidebook has given Prestonfield House hotel in Edinburgh three ticks - a distinction that had previously only been bestowed on the famous Gleneagles.

Mr Irvine describes Prestonfield House in his guidebook by exclaiming that there is "simply nothing like it anywhere else in the world", the Scotsman reports.

He also highlighted a number of restaurants in Edinburgh as offering some of the top food in the country and this demonstrates the growing attraction of Edinburgh to visitors.
