'Must see' buildings in Edinburgh for tourists
Visitors to Scotland may have heard of the Edinburgh Castle and the Firth of Forth from tourist guides, but those looking for an official list of places to see may be able to visit lesser known gems of the country's finest architecture.
Published in notable tourist writer Mark Irving's guide 1001 Buildings You Must See Before You Die are 14 similar must see buildings in Scotland that show traditional to radical designs for lovers of large scaled metropolitan beauty.
With buildings spanning all of Scotland in places like Maybole, Cupar and Alford, two buildings in Edinburgh highlight the scale from classic to chic in style that reflects the city's many tastes.
The Royal High School in Edinburgh represents what Mr Irving called the "Athens of the North", with its massively scaled Greek Revival elements and was built on Calton Hill in 1829.
To tour the city's oppositely modern and urban architecture, visit the Scottish Parliament built in 2004, which is a unique building and what the author calls "one of Europe's most interesting modern architects".
Visitors looking to stay in the city can also sample some of the superbly ranged hotels and other accommodation that offer old world to contemporary.
The Le Monde hotel in the city centre is one example of modern living that offers guests a choice between suites that are designed after worldwide cities such as Paris and Tokyo. Whatever your taste, Edinburgh will have a place to suit your desires.
