Visitors staying at one of Blackpool's many B&Bs in the new year are set to see the town on the silver screen thanks to a collection of old films

Blackpool and the North-West on Film - a series of events taking place at venues throughout the town during January - is the ideal way to find out more about the seaside town's heritage.

The earliest film in the collection dates back to 1899, while other footage includes rare colour footage taken in the 1920s and films of the North Pier and promenade right through to the 1960s.

A collection of images from the turn of the 19th century will be displayed in the town's Winter Gardens on January 12th, while Mitchell & Kenyon film Electric Edwardians will be screened the following day.

Speaking to the Blackpool Citizen, councillor Tony Williams said: "We saw when we held the showing of some of the films to launch our heritage strategy in the resort what a very great response there was to the event and to these films I am sure this will be replicated when we hold these very special showings in January.

"The films really are of great interest to anyone who loves Blackpool and the North West and is keen to see more of our history," he added.

Mitchell and Kenyon films were commissioned by travelling exhibitors at the turn of the 20th century for screening in town halls, at village fetes and local fairs covering local people doing everyday things such as going to football matches, leaving work, marching in civic processions or enjoying annual works holidays.
