Edinburgh is being given extra funding in an effort to help it cover the cost of being Scotland's capital city, it has been revealed.

The move is likely to see an increase in the development of facilities and infrastructure in the city, so that it can offer greater services to the thousands of people who visit the city every year.

Scotland's finance secretary has announced the increase in funding and it is hoped that the move will boost tourism in the city with more people looking to stay in hotels and bed and breakfasts.

Jenny Dawe, leader of the city's council, said that the extra investment was needed to help ensure the long-term success of Edinburgh.

"The profile and prosperity of Scotland and the capital city are intertwined," she said.

Speaking to the Herald, Ms Dawe added: "Each benefits from the success of the other."

If agreed, the extra funding will begin from spring 2009.
