The discovery of a Roman fort could prompt an increase in the number of visitors flocking to Cornwall every year.

Archaeologists found the treasure, which dates from the 1st century AD, in fields close to Calstock, the BBC reports.

Pottery pieces and a furnace have also been unearthed at the site, close to a silver mine.

Experts believe the discovery could help historians to find out more about the little-known Roman occupation in Cornwall.

Speaking to the BBC, archaeologist Dr Stephen Rippon from the University of Exeter, which carried out the excavation, explained that the Roman army only stayed in the area for a few decades, before moving on to Wales.

"This find could help us to understand whether they were merely keeping watch over the locals, or were actually interested in exploiting commercial opportunities in the region," he said.

Finding bed and breakfast in Cornwall is easy. The county offers many hidden gems by way of accommodation to suit any budget.
