Couples looking for more adventurous options when it comes to their stag and hen parties but who are on a tight budget should try a self catering break in Cumbria.

More and more prospective brides and grooms are heading off to foreign climes for their pre-wedding parties, with some 70 per cent of British stag parties now being held abroad.

But with the cost of an average wedding now approaching a staggering £17,000 there are plenty of affordable short break options available in the UK that are just as exciting.

Raw War Paintballing in Cumbria offers stags (and hens) the chance to battle it out in over 120 acres of forestland in Aspatria.

Meanwhile, hens can relax in the luxury of one of Cumbria's many self-catering cottages, with the roar of a log fire surrounded by their closest family and friends.

Some such as 17th century four-star Grade II-listed Knipe Hall in Ullswater sleep up to 12 people, meaning that no-one is left out.

And what's more, this property also boasts a party barn, where girls and guys can socialise in a larger space, while a hot tub really sets the place apart from your average hotel.

"I think with the vast amount of options available to you these days regarding stag and hen parties it is hard to just stay in your home town," Francesca Moore, spokesperson for hitched.co.uk, said.

"Even if you don't want to travel, a day out at the races for the ladies, or a go carting experience for the lads is much more fun than a few pints down the local," she added.
