Tourists staying at Cornwall B&Bs near Falmouth this September are well-paced to enjoy a "spectacular" gathering of tall ships, Visit Cornwall reports.

The coastal resort is the point for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta, a major race between intrepid sailors which runs from Cornwall to the port of Funchal in Madeira.

Those who prefer to stay on dry land will also find plenty to enjoy at the event - quite apart from viewing some of the most beautiful seacraft in the world.

The organisers have laid on a host of street markets, concerts, theatre and fireworks displays, climaxing in the start of the race.

Around ten tall rigged ships are expected in Falmouth harbour for the duration of the four day event, along with a variety of smaller craft.

For locals, much excitement has already been caused by the announcement by organisers of a competition to find a local youngster to take part in the race.

"To sail on a tall ship is often a truly life changing experience for a young person," chief liaison officer for the Funchal 500 Tall Ship Regatta, Ian Munday, commented.

The Tall Ships Regatta runs from September 10th to 13th.

Events run between 10am and 5pm each day.
