People heading for a getaway in Cumbria B&Bs this weekend can take part in a host of special celebrations to mark St George's Day.

English Heritage has launched a campaign to encourage English people to celebrate their patron saint's day with the same excitement as their Scottish, Irish and Welsh neighbours celebrate their national saint's day.

"It is a travesty that St George's Day seems to pass by with not so much as a whimper let alone a bang," Dr Tracy Borman, English Heritage's director of learning, said.

"The fact that more than three times as many people celebrate Guy Fawkes than St George's Day, shows that there is real inertia when it comes to embracing our patron saint and the wonderful heritage that he represents."

English Heritage hopes to change this attitude by hosting an array of St George's-inspired events across the country over the weekends either side of April 23rd.

In Cumbria, Inner State Theatre is performing a rendition of the encounter between St George and a dragon on April 19th and 20th entitled St George - with a Twist in the Tale.

Taking place at the 900-year-old fortress Carlisle Castle, the show is set to entertain the youngest and oldest members of the family.
