Blackpool's B&Bs were at maximum capacity this weekend as in excess of 8,000 people visited the resort for gay Pride celebrations.

For the third annual Blackpool Pride festival, 200 people donned a range of colourful costumes to parade down the promenade on Saturday in front of the thronged crowds.

A series of floats had been transformed into beach-bars, boats and nightclubs for the vibrant procession.

This was followed by two days of festivities on the North Pier where Same Difference and Rowetta from X-Factor and Pop Idol's Michelle McManus took to the stage.

Mark Seargent, founder of Blackpool Pride, told the Blackpool Gazette that the festivities had "been significantly better than last year".

"We are about 15 years behind Manchester, but if we can add two or three thousand extra people a year it will grow slowly."

"We always aim to make it better but we want to keep it safe," he added.

Blackpool council officials reportedly intend to bid for the European Pride celebrations which can be attended by around 250,000 revellers.
