People travelling to stay in a Blackpool B&B will be happy to hear that Blackpool Airport is due for major investment after it was bought by a private company.

Balfour Beatty has acquired the airport for £14 million and could now invest millions more in enhancing the complex.

The construction corporation also owns Exeter International Airport where passenger numbers have risen from 300,000 to one million since the takeover.

Around £6 million has already been earmarked to improve Blackpool Airport taxiways and local regeneration officials are hoping that this is just a taste of things to come.

Doug Garrett, chief executive of a Blackpool regeneration company, told the Blackpool Gazette that the sale was "good news" for the resort.

"Balfour Beatty has deeper pockets than the previous owners and operational experience of handling airports."

"We want to be able to stable more aircraft at Blackpool and that will help with the development of more routes," he added.

It is now hoped that more airlines will choose to fly into Blackpool, bringing more visitors to the many fantastic Blackpool B&Bs.
