Animal-loving guests staying at a Cornwall B&B are flocking to the county's National Seal Sanctuary, which could also help to boost the local fishing economy.

The seal sanctuary has become a popular attraction by running boat trips into the sea to view the population of 400 grey seals.

However, around 80 grey sales are believed to be killed each year by fishing infrastructure, while the animals cost the industry £100,000 in spoilt fish stock.

Natural England said in a recent report that if people visiting the seals may be willing to pay an average £2.63 donation then the sanctuary could make £526,000 per year.

This would reduce the estimated cost to the fishing industry and "fund work to reduce both seal by-catch and the damage caused by seals to fish in nets".

"More of the economic value people place on seals could be captured by the south-west's economy if more boat trips provided facilities for young children," continued Natural England.

This will be good news for people staying at a Cornwall B&B as they can enjoy the seals and help improve the local environment and economy.
