Cornwall B&B: Popular Cornish restaurant puts squirrel on the menu
16th May 2008Food-loving guests of a Cornwall B&B can now enjoy an unusual meal of a grey squirrel pasty at a Cornish restaurant.
Chef Kevin Viner put grey squirrel on the menu at Viners restaurant and bar in Summercourt, which is close to surfing resort of Newquay.
He previously was head chef and proprietor of Pennypots, which was Cornwall's first Michelin-starred restaurant
Mr Viner cooks the animal in pasties or serves it with a fricassee of Cornish cream and said that he has sold around 80 servings a week since it went on sale a month ago.
He said that it is possibly the perceived healthy image of squirrel meat which attracts people to it.
"They are cute and they are so magical [in] the way they run around and do things. But meat is meat and in the rest of Europe people eat squirrels all the time."
"Southern fried squirrel is good. And tandoori style works. It is especially tasty fricasseed with Cornish cream and walnuts. But the one everyone seems to like is the Cornish squirrel pasty," he added.
Any adventurous, food loving people staying at a Cornwall B&B will no doubt be looking forward to tucking into some squirrel this summer.
