St Ives has been named as one of the UK's top destinations for a holiday with large numbers of people visiting the Cornish seaside town and staying at a local B&B.

During the presently difficult financial conditions, an increasing amount of British people are opting to take a domestic holiday instead of going abroad.

This has significantly benefitted places like St Ives alongside the coastal town of Torquay in Devon which was also singled out as one of the most treasured yet lesser known UK beaches.

In the survey by laterooms.com, Torquay scooped 53 per cent of votes while 45 per cent opted for St Ives.

According to data by the Office of National Statistics, a seaside holiday is the option of choice for 60 per cent of British holidaymakers.

St Ives was named the UK's best seaside town in 2007 by a panel of experts and has consistently been a cherished destination for guests staying at a Cornwall B&B.
