Edinburgh B&B: Jenners gets multi-million pound makeover
A cherished landmark in Edinburgh's shopping tradition will soon re-open after a major refit to offer a resurgent attraction for guests staying at an Edinburgh B&B.
Jenners celebrates its 170th anniversary by unveiling a £3 million refurbishment to help it compete with rivals such as John Lewis and Harvey Nichols.
Considered the 'Harrods of the North', a major anniversary and re-opening ceremony is planned for the store during October 2008.
George Bell, general manager, told the Scotsman that "people use the word a lot but I really do believe that Jenners is an institution" and added that he considers the refurbishment an evolution rather than revolution.
"It means a great deal to the people of Edinburgh. We've got a fantastic historical store but it is a bit outmoded and we really wanted to maintain that tradition but with a modern twist," he said.
The building is A-Listed and so has an eclectic lay-out due to its protected status but the refurbishment has cleaned up the incredible features and worked towards simplifying the design.
It is hoped that the re-launched store with please both fans of tradition and people looking for a modern shopping experience while staying at an Edinburgh B&B.
