Food and drink loving guests staying at a Cumbria B&B will be pleased to hear that a pub in the county has won a major Michelin award.

As part of Michelin's new Eating in Pubs Guide, the Punch Bowl Inn at Crosthwaite scooped the Michelin Pub of the Year for 2009 after beating 563 entries to scoop the accolade.

The Punch Bowl was praised for its beautiful rural setting, home brewed beer and use of local produce with the guide stating that "if it's fine dining without pretension you're after, this is definitely it".

Customers can choose from a range of ales or wine to accompany the lovely menu featuring a house speciality of baked cheese souffle.

Derek Bulmer, the guide's editor, commented that "the standard of cooking in British and Irish pubs keeps getting better and better".

"We are seeing a growing confidence in our culinary heritage, greater use of local, seasonal ingredients and a rediscovery of regional specialities," he added.
