Lifeguards stay longer for safer swimming in Devon and Cornwall
3rd Oct 2008The RNLI has announced that it is to extend the lifeguard season by six weeks to offer more safe swimming opportunities for people staying at a Devon and Cornwall B&B.
Despite the typical lifeguard season coming to a close at the end of September, the RNLI has instead opted to extend its important protection at beaches in the south-west.
Lifeguards will now cover the late October school holidays and even extend into November as people hope for some late autumn sunshine.
Steve Instance, RNLI inspector for lifeguards in the south-west, commented: "After a dismal summer, it would be great to get some late sun in October."
"The sea temperature is still warm at this time of year and, with the availability of cheap wetsuits and surf equipment, we expect the beaches, which continue to have RNLI lifeguard patrols to be busy," he added.
Mr Instance advised people wanting to learn to surf while staying at a Cornwall B&B to only take lessons from an instructor approved by the BSA or ISA.
