Animal-loving guests staying at Cumbria self-catering are able to view a newly established group of red squirrels at a holiday park in the Lake District.

Officials at the Skelwith Ford Caravan Park have been working for two years towards establishing a population of red squirrels at the site.

Some eight red squirrels have now created a habitat at the 130-acre park following a humane culling of the non-native grey squirrels to reduce the competition.

Henry Wild, owner of the park, told BBC News: "It's involved a lot of hard work on the part of Skelwith's own conservation team, but this fantastic result has made everything worthwhile."

"The possible return of the reds is something we've all dreamt of for a long time, and now it's become a reality thanks to the determination of the Skelwith community," he added.

The chance to view these rare and beautiful animals will no doubt prove too good to miss among people staying on Cumbrian self-catering holidays. ADNFCR-1180-ID-18878627-ADNFCR
