Edinburgh B&B: City streets to close for marathon and bike events
23rd May 2009Guests planning to stay at an Edinburgh B&B may be pleased to read that the city's streets are to be closed to traffic later this month for a marathon and cycle race event.
On the weekend of May 30th and 31st, streets in the Old Town and Grassmarket will be closed firstly for the debut Edinburgh Nocturne cycle race and then for the city's marathon.
Beijing Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy and Tour de France competitor David Millar will compete in the cycle competition around a 1.2 kilometre circuit taking in some of Edinburgh's major attractions.
Councillor Steve Cardownie, city events champion, told the Scotsman that any inconvenience caused by the closed roads will hopefully be offset by the economic boost from the race events.
"People enjoy competing, they enjoy spectating, but they also enjoy the rattle of the tills. In a time of recession it's imperative that we attract events like this to boost the local economy," he explained.
"Cycling events are always very popular; they can be quite spectacular. We have had cycling events in the city before and they were very well received."
These two marvellous events will no doubt prove popular among people staying at the many fantastic B&Bs in the Scottish capital.
